Do Contacts Damage Your Vision?

Since contact lenses were first introduced as a viable correction option for the visually-impaired, millions have enjoyed their many benefits. Yet with continuous use, many wonder if wearing contacts can harm the eye or if their vision will be permanently altered.

The good news is that contact lenses are very safe when worn properly. However, there are some risks involved; it is important to understand what you can do to ensure your eyes stay strong for years to come.

When Contacts Become Dangerous

There are multiple situations where contacts can stop helping and start hurting your eyes. Contacts become dangerous when they are:

  • Not fitted properly for your eyes
  • Not cleaned or removed as directed by a doctor
  • Not replaced in the proper time frame

Your eyes are very delicate, complex organs. Exposure to germs, debris, and bacteria can all have a major impact if not prevented and treated quickly. Trusting your instincts when your contacts don’t feel right and keeping in touch with your ophthalmologist are key to recognizing problems with your contact lenses.

How To Prevent Damage From Contacts

It is encouraging to know you have most of the power when it comes to taking care of your vision.

The most important step you can take is to have your contacts properly fitted. For most people, this means visiting a professional ophthalmologist. Each eye is different and many variables need to be accounted for before you get your contacts. If contacts aren’t fitted properly your risk for irritability, vision problems, and eye abrasions increases.

Next, make sure to clean your contacts properly. Don’t use water or old contact solution to clean your contacts. This includes not topping off your old solution with new solution. Always wash your hands before handling your contacts and wash your contact case regularly.

Adhere to the replacement policy advised by your doctor. No matter what the schedule is, make sure to have new contact lenses ready to go at the scheduled time. Even with proper cleaning, deposits will build up on your lenses that can cause problems. We also advise switching out your contacts case once every three months to greatly reduce the risk of contamination.

Some other simple ideas include not sleeping with your contacts in unless they are designed to do so, choosing softer lenses for better oxygen flow, and putting your contacts in before you wear any makeup.
